How to Countercondition your Dog's Doorbell Behavior From a Negative To a Positive
Counter-conditioning is the conditioning (changing) of an unwanted behavior or response to a wanted one. Suppose we had a bad reaction (a feeling of insecurity) to a fear-inducing stranger.
We would change that behavior or response by associating the stranger with a positive action, like offering a tasty treat. This associates a wanted positive response with the stranger.
In this example we are using a doorbell and the act of training our dog to go to his/her bed.
The Goal: To teach your dog to make a link between the doorbell and going to his or her bed.
This can help provide a positive result when the doorbell rings rather than a negative outcome during door greetings when guests arrive.
